Crafting Digital Writing by Troy Hicks
When I was reading this book, I was struck by how well Troy Hicks explores the justification for crafting digital writing. The chapters are broken down by type of digital text, and in each chapter he includes possibilities for all three types of writing mentioned in the CCSS. He also uses the MAPS heuristic (Mode, Media, Audience, Purpose, Situation) to further delineate the types of assignments that are possible. Finally, in most chapters, he guides teachers to think about what should be considered when assessing these texts.
I needed a way to manage and connect all the information from the book, so I created a template that I (and other teachers) could use to plan digital lessons. I also created a separate document for teachers to use that encourages them to think about how they will assess their digital lesson.
In order to test the effectiveness of this lesson, I used it to adapt an old lesson of mine about The Scarlet Letter.
