The Writer's Notebook
When I glance through my writer's notebook, I am shocked at how much writing I have done! This is the thing that strikes me the most. I have filled almost 36 pages with writing! Some of it is crap, but some of it is GOOD! I think the free write I did about my bad hair experience will make an excellent memoir to share with my students. They will definitely be able to relate to this experience, and I think I will challenge myself to really use my sense of humor in this memoir. My memoirs are usually very emotional. I like that this piece presents me with the opportunity to be funny. I love looking back at the Morrill Hall piece I did for the Writing Marathon. My very first piece of fiction! I think I might try to bring this to completion as well. I also like my personal essay about my desire to have another baby. It was very therapeutic to write about this, and it was leading to a piece about appreciating my girls as they grow through the stages of childhood, and not simply lamenting the loss of my days of being the mother of babies. Overall, there are several pieces that I could develop into something more.
When I use the writer's notebook in my class with my students, I will make some changes, but I am thrilled at the prospects. Of all the sections, the one that is newest for me as a writer and a teacher is the Writing section. I am eager to have my students turn back and look at what they've created, just as I have done, and to dig through their own writing to find the gems that they can develop into something more.
