Snapshot Poetry
I used a photo of my daughter Maddy to create a snapshot poem. I used my typical approach to poetry which is heavily narrative. It was a challenging poem to get exactly right, but I was very comfortable with the revision process as it matches other poetry I have written.
After creating this poem for her, I realized that I needed to write one for my other little daughter Lilly. The poem that came from the photo was difficult for me. Instead of telling the story of the photo, I wanted to emphasize how her personality comes through the photo. I avoid writing poetry that rhymes or has a form in any way. With this poem, the form kept coming back, and when I stopped resisting the form, I really challenged myself to play and experiment with it. Writing a poem that has a pattern, beat, or rhyme was a real challenge, especially when I was trying to find a way out at the end.
